Plants & Flowers

Fifteen patterns for plants with one clear advantage over the real thing: they are still alive in February. Lily and lavender bouquets, hanging plants, string of pearls, succulents in pots, sunflowers and mushrooms.

These are ideal small-batch projects. A single lavender stem is made from a pile of tiny pieces you can carry around and work on in odd moments, then assemble all at once — and a bunch of five looks far more impressive than the effort it took.

Two tips that apply to most of them. Wire the stems and leaves where the pattern calls for it, or everything hangs limp instead of curving naturally. And use odd numbers in a vase: three, five or seven stems look right, four does not. The lavender stem is free if you want to try the method first.
